Educational Programs

IFMA Boston is committed to assisting our membership to strengthen their professional skills, increase their value as a business team member, work towards professional credentialing, acquire practical tips and techniques and develop comprehensive action plans for their organization. Throughout the year we provide opportunities for weekly study halls to prepare for the CFM certification exam, and two day test preparation courses. We also organize and promote additional professional training that we feel is important to our members in the areas of disaster planning, finance, and asset management.

BACHELOR’S DEGREE PROGRAMS
Wentworth Institute of Technology :
Bachelor of Science in Construction Management with a Concentration in Facility Management (effective fall 2017 semester)

Wentworth’s construction management program with a concentration in facility management begins in the fall 2017 semester. The facility management (FM) concentration offers a comprehensive educational experience to enable students to become successful FM professionals and leaders. The Bachelor of Science in Construction Management (BSCM) with a Concentration in Facility Management offers collaborative coursework leading to an exciting career; helping degree students become a productive member of projects teams and an innovative problem solver. Graduates are prepared to meet the strategic and operational demands of corporate clients and end-users while overseeing a variety of projects within the built environment. Wentworth graduates transition into successful careers with facility management companies, government agencies, design and engineering firms, construction managers, colleges and universities, hospitals, real estate firms and FM product/service providers.

Massachusetts Maritime Academy:
Bachelor of Science in Facilities Management
 – a four year program that prepares graduates for careers in facilities engineering, management, and operations in positions providing for the safe, economical, and sustainable operation of the various equipment and systems found in large complex facilities, such as manufacturing plants, office buildings, hospitals, and power plants. The FE program requires the students to complete three co-ops typically during their junior and senior years.

The FE program offers students the opportunity to take the optional, highly encouraged, examination for a Massachusetts Stationary Engineer license and/or the examination for a Massachusetts Municipal Waste Water Operators license. Other professional certifications are also available.

Massachusetts Maritime Academy:
Bachelor of Science in Emergency Management
– a four year program with coursework that has been developed for each of three key concepts; hazard, risk, and disaster. The program component for hazard and risk (risk management) consists of a framework that explores four states in assessment and management including Risk Assessment, Control Analysis, Strategy Section and Implementation and Evaluation. In the case of disaster, the students study the different temporal stages in a disaster cycle, including; Mitigation or Prevention, Preparedness, Response and Recovery. The program’s depth and range of practical coursework and experience, provides an EM graduate, the skills for a smooth transition from college to a profession in the emergency management field.

MASTER’S DEGREE PROGRAMS
Wentworth Institute of Technology:
Master’s of Science degree in Facility Management – The Master of Science in Facility Management (MSFM) program at Wentworth Institute of Technology is designed to educate students in foundational post-graduate management principles and enhanced facility management skills and knowledge. Students will learn the leadership and business skills necessary to respond to the demand to keep their facilities highly efficient and functional. Coursework will also integrate elements of several related disciplines, including: project management, finance, real estate, humans and their working environment, space planning, building operations and maintenance, and quality assessment. The MSFM program is designed for working professionals, as an on-campus format (as well as an online format) with convenient evening classes and a cohort format that allows students to complete the degree in less than two (2) years while still being able to work full-time and fulfill their personal responsibilities.

Master’s of Science degree in Facilities Management
– Massachusetts Maritime Academy’s Graduate and Continuing Education Division offers a unique graduate degree in Facilities Management. This true executive style format allows personal time in the classroom and individualized attention from the instructors. The sixteen month program is built from the triple bottom line up. It integrates the social aspect through organizing people and policies, the economic piece through finance and project management and finally incorporates the environmental facet through energy management and emergency preparedness.

This degree is designed to provide current and prospective facilities managers with the personal, interpersonal, and group skills necessary to implement creative ideas and thus reduce the gap between good ideas and accepted practices.

Wentworth Institute of Technology College of Professional and Continuing Education:

Wentworth Institute of Technology’s facilities management certificate is intended for professionals currently working in the facilities management field who are seeking to advance their career. This certificate is designed to deliver the critical information needed to prepare for the Certified Facilities Manager exam offered by the International Facilities Management Association (IFMA). In addition to the basic principles of facilities management, students will learn facilities project management, facilities real estate and property development, and financial skills for the facilities manager.

This program is conveniently formatted for adult learners, with fast-paced seven week courses that allow you to quickly gain career-enhancing skills. A facilities management certificate will be awarded upon the successful completion of the required four courses. Students who successfully complete this certificate are eligible for eight (8) credits towards general electives in our bachelor’s degree programs.

Boston University Center for Professional Education -The BU FM Certificate Program is designed for practicing facility management professionals. Boston University’s Certificate in Facilities Management explores core disciplines within the field, insuring that students obtain the knowledge necessary to develop and execute the strategic and operational mission of corporate facilities management.

Certificates are awarded in Facilities Management upon successful completion of six courses.

The only way to achieve the FMP certificate is through the current FMP program and the Wentworth Facilities Management Certificate Program is not licensed or compliant with the current courses.
